As the end of the year comes to a close, I just want to sit back and acknowledge the goodness of God in revealing my purpose in this season. This year I spent a lot of days asking Him, “What am I doing here? What is my purpose? Why am I still here?” I didn’t have a 9 to 5 like many do. I didn’t have a set schedule. I didn’t even have a financial need to work. My heart was confused and longing for something. Longing for my destiny. But what was it?
Have you ever asked God a question that He already told you the answer to?
I swear I do this all the time, which just testifies to me of His great patience! When I think about my journey in book writing, I can look back and see that there was definitely fruit at the onset, but because I did not experience the growth I desired, I dismissed it. Instead, I focused on my career in accounting, and struggled to fit myself inside of a box. Most people who I know that are entrepreneurs are longing to bust out of that box, but I was trying to stay in it! My risk averse nature was shining through, SMH. I also knew that this entrepreneurial endeavor was going to be another lesson in faith, and in all transparency, I did not want another lesson.
God was, once again, patient with me though. It took me several years before I started writing again and then published my latest book “Stories for the (Urban) Soul”. When I think about it, I don’t think I could have written it any sooner because the transformation that was happening in me with regards to my culture, as well as religion, needed to happen in order to write it. I needed to be in that space of being relatable to everyday people. I needed to be love with skin on, in order to write about people being love with skin on.
I finally realized one day that the question I kept asking, “What is my purpose?” was already answered. This happened when I found myself engaging within a community of people who were on a similar mission. Like minded, driven, young, passionate people, pursuing small business. Pursuing purpose. They were building something, creating something out of nothing, and transforming their communities in the process.
In the upcoming weeks, you are going to meet some of these people on this blog. You are going to hear their stories and hopefully be inspired by them. Even if you yourself are not called to entrepreneurship, you are called to purpose, and these individuals are examples of those who heard the call, and said yes.
Yesterday I went to an event where a man I esteem said that people can be successful in this world, but not be in purpose. Then, when they get to the end of their life, they find out that the millions of dollars they accumulated could have been billions, and the lives that they touched could have been magnified had they chosen to be in purpose. Wow. (Special shout out to Elijah Frazier for dropping those nuggets!)
In all honesty, I can’t say that I set out for this endeavor, but I know that a long time ago I set out for Him. Or rather, He set out for me, and I responded, “Yes, Lord.”
So, I ask you dear friend, “Are you walking in purpose?” My purpose may not look like yours and yours may not look like the next persons, but it’s still just as important. Vital even. There are people attached to your purpose. There are doors you will open for others. Those who only you can inspire. People who cannot get to their level until you get to yours. How do I know this? Because we are all connected. Whether we realize it or not, we are. I could not have gotten to where I am today without those who came before, and each day I want my life to be a testimony of their faithfulness.
Will you join me in honoring then?
Will you join me in this pursuit of purpose?
