Run to Win

Several years ago I stumbled upon a new series that I knew was profound. What I didn’t know was that this show would not only be profound to me, but to the whole nation. With each episode, the storyline unfolded a unique, but relatable family and we all sat there with our eyes glued to the screen. The sister was obese, the brother was a womanizing celebrity, and the other brother, well he was a brotha, brotha, you know what I’m sayin’? (He was Black, just in case you missed it). And, just in case you’re still in the dark as to what in the world I’m talking about, well, I’m referring to the hit series, “This Is Us”.

When I first saw this show I was moved by the realness of it. The people were broken with a host of flaws but loved each other anyway. They were there for each other. Much like me and my tribe :-).

Sadly the writers are putting the final touches on their last season. In my opinion, they’ve done a stunning job of continuing to reveal the beautiful story of this family and clearly have no intention of slacking off their creative genius as they wrap up.

In this last episode (and just in case you haven’t seen it, here is the great big spoiler alert!) I was moved for a variety of reasons. But the one that stood out the most was Randall’s discussion with his mom about his opportunity to run for Senator. Rebecca looks at her son in amazement and gushes over his pursuit of this huge accomplishment, to which Randall bashfully replies something to the effect of, “Mom. I hate to say this. But if I run, I’ll win.”

Boom. And there it is.

These were the words that resonated in my heart. These words were my truth.

Not too long ago I was seeking the Holy Spirit about all these desires stirring in my heart. This drive, this feeling of being called to something bigger. This dream. But I wondered at the future. Am I really going to manifest this thing, or have I missed the mark?

His immediate response was, “Run to Win.” A very long time ago Paul said something similar to the Corinthians:

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”

1 Cor 9:24

I knew God was telling me to be all in. That I would win as long as I ran to get the prize and hearing Randall share a similar sentiment was encouraging.

Sometimes you just know that you know that you know that what is inside of you is going to be brilliant when it comes out.

Like giving birth. Whatever you are pregnant with has to be born.

I believe we are all brilliant and we are all brilliant in a variety of ways. When we let our light shine, when we unleash the brilliance within, well, the world is lit up and darkness has to flee.

I am like Randall in this season of my life. I know that I’m going to win. Because I was made too.

And guess what?

So were you.
